Top Ten List #1: The Best Films To Begin a DVD Collection
.) The Universally Loved Favorite -Top Gun (1986): Reason why: It's the universally loved film from 1986, and one of the only blockbusters that has been able to stay the same caliber no matter how many times you watch it. If you ever want to crank your surround sound to full force, this Tom Cruise classic has plenty of action scenes for that very reason! When someone looks at your collection, they'll be thinking, "Well, at least they have Top Gun."
.) Science Fiction -The Matrix (1999): Reason why: It's one of the most popular science fiction films ever and a landmark in modern cinema. The second sequel is worthy of its success, but the third is rather forgettable. It's the 1999 original that made the rules for future films to come, simply by breaking them completely.
.) Horror/Thriller -The Silence of the Lambs (1991): Reason why: Because you'll be scared just knowing that the film is in your possession. When you look at someone's collection and they have The Silence of the Lambs, either they love Best Picture winners or love being scared to death. Either one is completely acceptable. It's also one of the only films in cinematic history to win the top five Oscar categories (Best Picture, Director Jonathon Demme, Actor Anthony Hopkins , Actress Jodie Foster, and Adapted Screenplay Ted Tally).
.) War -Apocalypse Now (1979): Reason Why: Every collection has to have a War movie, so whether it's the original cut or the extended version, Apocalypse Now takes the cake. I would also recommend Saving Private Ryan, but if you want something a little older and a little less Hollywood, then I'd take this Francis Ford Coppola masterpiece any day.
.) Western -The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (1966): Reason Why: Because it's the greatest western ever made. Simply put, Sergio Leone is the master of the western, and this brilliant film starring Clint Eastwood is his strongest feature.
.) Blockbuster -The Dark Knight (2008): Reason Why: You'll be the only person in the world who doesn't have the 2nd highest grossing film of all time and one of the biggest events in the history of cinema. This includes the tragedy of Heath Ledger's death, the box-office records, the 8 Academy Award nominations (although I believe the AMPAS gave one of the biggest snubs for Best Picture ever), Christopher Nolan, the unanimous praise, etc. I could go on forever. Did I also mention that this is one hell of an amazing film?
.) Film Lesson -Any Martin Scorsese Movie (1959-Present): Reason why: Because if you don't have at least one Martin Scorsese movie, then it's not considered a movie collection.
.) Comedy -Dazed and Confused (1993): Reason why: This is a tough call. I could pick up hundreds of choices here, but I went with Richard Linklater's wonderful Dazed and Confused because it's the perfect way to start the comedy genre for your collection. Funny, nostalgic, and with a fantastic ensemble cast, this is a surefire classic that deserves to be an important piece of your DVD empire.
.) Classic -It's A Wonderful Life (1946): Reason Why: What better movie is there to watch at Christmas time?
.) Personal Favorite -Any movie you love that you want to share with the world! Reason Why: It's your collection. Buy the film you love even if everyone else hates it. Trust me, I know how it feels. I bought The Happening the day it came out and still make all of my friends watch it if they haven't seen it.
